Alfreton is a busy market town in the heart of Derbyshire. An attractive former coal mining town with some imposing and impressive buildings, including Alfreton Hall, which was built in around 1724 for a local coal mining family. Another place of interest it the 'house of confinment' on Kings Street, this small rectangular jail was built in 1820. Alfreton's position on the A61 and close to the M1 motorway give it easy access to the larger cities of Derby, Nottingham, and Sheffield, and mean it is ideally located for exploring the Peak District.
